About us

Based in Austin, TX DroneSense was founded in 2015 by software entrepreneurs and early drone adopters who immediately recognized the benefits of drone usage within public safety. Since then, DroneSense has assembled a well-rounded team from diverse backgrounds who believe in the positive impact drones can have. We envision a future where drones are stationed on every firehouse, are available in every police squad car, and deploy ahead of EMS -- often being the actual first responder on a scene. We are driven by our goal to empower public safety organizations to effectively utilize drones in various missions to expand situational awareness, be a force multiplier and ultimately, save more lives.

We are proud to work with groups like APSA and WeRespond - Smart Firefighting Community to help continue the responsible integration and use of UAS in public safety organizations.

Careers

Would I like working at DroneSense?

Enjoying your work and who you work with is important.
We care a lot about our company culture and core values. Most companies say that, but we really mean it. We're very passionate about helping Emergency Responders -- first and foremost. We're the type of people that happily jump in to do something that's not "in our job description", but needs to be done by someone. We want to have fun and joke around, yet still be accountable to each other for our goals and projects. We value being hard working, creative, and imaginative so we can find the best solution, not just the first solution. We have an extreme focus on making our First Responders' jobs easier, helping them do more quicker, and solving their unique problems. We value time with our family, friends, and outside activities (so we don't want to be worked to death), and we also really like to get things done and ship high-quality features every other week to our Public Safety customers.

What are the benefits at DroneSense?

We make sure we pay a competitive and fair salary by keeping our pulse on the market and checking multiple salary databases. We want everyone to make the best long-term choice rather than the quick and easy choice, so everyone has company stock options. We also offer five medical insurance plans so you can choose the best option for your situation.

QA Engineer

We're looking for a talented tester ready to join a small and growing startup. Do you want to help first responders save lives using drone technology? If flying drones outside in the morning and writing automation in the afternoon sounds fun - we’d love to talk to you.

Your Day to Day:

  • Flying & testing drones with our mobile apps
  • Building an automation framework for our drone software platform
  • Evaluating and making sure our first responders' needs are met
  • Investigating & troubleshooting complex issues
  • Release Testing (Manual & Automated)

What we are looking for:

  • 2+ years writing UI automation
  • Mobile testing experience
  • Experience with test & release planning
  • Strong sense of ownership
  • You are familiar with agile methodologies but don’t think there is only one way to get things done
  • Experience with Drones (or a desire to learn)

Android Developer

Want to build Android apps using Kotlin to help Firefighters and First Responders fly drones to save lives? Join DroneSense to make a real difference by solving interesting technical challenges in a fun startup environment.

What would I be doing?

A typical day includes writing Kotlin code to knock a handful of cards off the Kanban board, helping other Engineers with blockers they mentioned at the standup, heading outside to fly your latest changes with one of our many drones, and possibly talking with a Firefighter about a new feature idea.

Would I be a good match for this position?

We're not super concerned with your degrees and decades of experience -- we do want someone who has the skills and attitude to get the job done and add to our culture. To accomplish that we're looking for great Engineers who:

  • have built multiple real Android apps (and maybe even an iOS app or two)
  • write strong, maintainable code using good design principles
  • can surgically refactor code to build a better design without rewriting the world
  • want great unit tests to know their code works well and flag when it breaks
  • like how a healthy code review can improve their design/code and help them learn new ways to solve problems (whether reviewer or reviewee)
  • can work independently on the projects they own; but know when to grab a friend to whiteboard a better solution
  • like working together as a team to solve complex challenges

It would also be great if you have worked with drones, WebRTC, video frameworks, and optimizing and profiling code performance.

UX Designer

Love the idea of creating simple, intuitive apps to help Firefighters and First Responders fly drones to save lives? Join DroneSense to make a real difference by solving interesting UX and design challenges in a fun startup environment.

What would I be doing?

A typical day includes knocking a few cards off the Kanban board by creating a wireframe for a new flight control feature, jumping up to a whiteboard to brainstorm a new flow with a couple Engineers and a Co-Founder, and creating a prototype using InVision for a map-layer management capability,  then helping one of the iOS, Android, or Web UI Engineers really fine-tune a screen before it's code-complete, heading outside to fly your latest design with one of our many drones to ensure the User Experience really works, and possibly doing a User Interview with a Firefighter about a new feature idea.

Would I be a good match for this position?

We're not really worried about  your decades of experience and degrees  -- we do want someone who has the skills and attitude to get the job done and add to our culture. To accomplish that we're looking for great people who:

  • have created intuitive user experiences for real products
  • know how to design new screens, features, and enhancements, but can also refine existing designs
  • follow UX best practices using tools like wireframes, prototyping tools, and UX interaction diagrams
  • love working with Users, Product Management, or Engineers to define upcoming features
  • like to help UI Developers refine the final presentation of capabilities
  • have a strong understanding of good Information Architecture and Design principles
  • can communicate clearly with the rest of the team and our users
  • like jumping in to learn new technologies
  • know how to interview users to understand their real-world needs so we can incorporate the feedback into future designs
  • have designed for Web apps and both native and responsive Mobile experiences
  • like moving quickly to get features out and learn
  • can work independently on the projects they own; but know when to grab a friend to whiteboard a better solution
  • like working together as a team to solve complex challenges

It would also be great if you have worked with drones, done some product management, mentored other UX Designers and know how to share UX knowledge with Engineers.  We also would appreciate if you have experience with video post-production, audio editing, or refining the style of presentation material.

We're looking for someone with a passion for helping First Responders. Someone who can become an expert with the DroneSense platform. Someone who likes digging in deep to find the best solution when called by a Firefighter who's run into a problem flying their drone. If talking with Emergency personnel in the morning and flying drones outside  in the afternoon sounds fun - we may be a great match.

Your Day to Day:

  • Responding to tickets and support calls from First Responders using our software.
  • Evaluating our releases prior to shipping software for their impact on customers
  • Flying & testing drones with our mobile apps
  • Reproducing issues users are seeing in the field and communicating them with the rest of the team
  • Investigating & troubleshooting complex issues
  • Adding articles to our support system
  • Occasional travel to our customers' sites for training

What we are looking for:
